"Theseus in the Labyrinth"

Theseus sails to Crete to free the Athenians from a terrible burden. For every nine years, the city was forced to offer a horrific sacrifice to the Minotaur, a monster with the body of a man and the head of a bull: seven young men and seven young women. The king’s son ventures into the Minotaur’s labyrinth to slay the monster. But the even greater danger for Theseus lies in escaping the perilous labyrinth built by the brilliant architect Daedalus…

Beyond its surface-level plot, the myth of Theseus also contains a universal message expressed through wonderful symbols. Thus, the symbol of the hero represents a power that each of us can discover within ourselves to find our way out of the labyrinth of the phenomenal world. Greek mythology inspired Bernhard Wosien to choreograph a dance ritual incorporating Greek folk dances that brings the special symbolism of the labyrinth to life through movement. Friedel Kloke-Eibl and Krisana Kirchner guide us through this ritual and accompany us “back to the roots”:

October 22–25, 2026 Dance Symposium

Directed by: Friedel Kloke-Eibl

Instructors: Saskia Kloke, Dr. Gergana Panova, Marianne Baumann, Alfred Bast

The term “symposium” comes from Ancient Greek and refers to a “social gathering”—a discussion on a specific topic, usually of an academic nature.

Our theme is “Meditation through Dance”—building on Bernhard Wosien’s original concept, we will explore its further development by Friedel Kloke-Eibl together—through dance and song, supplemented by a short presentation on the Seven Liberal Arts.

The seven disciplines of the liberal arts inspired both Bernhard Wosien and Friedel Kloke-Eibl and found expression in their dances and choreographies.

Location: St. Otto Diocesan Center, Heinrichsdamm 32, 96047 Bamberg

Seminar fee: 210 / 160 for members of the Dance Community MdT
